Meghalaya Karatekas bag 60 medals at Inter-Zonal C’ship

Shillong, Dec 5: Meghalaya’s karate contingent returned from the 4th All India Inter-Zonal Karate Championship 2025 in New Delhi with an impressive medal haul, securing 60 medals in total, including 1 Gold, 5 Silver and 14 Bronze, marking one of the State’s strongest national-level performances in recent years.
A 27-member squad, led by coaches Donboklang Lyngdoh and Mingson Rymbai, represented the All Meghalaya Karate-Do Association at the championship held at Talkatora Stadium on December 1 and 2.
Competing across various age groups and weight categories, the athletes showcased exceptional skill and discipline throughout the event.
The standout performer was Barisha Kharbani, who clinched the Gold medal in the Women’s Individual Kumite (61 kg), leading the State’s medal-winning charge.
Several karatekas contributed to Meghalaya’s medal tally, including Paul Danny Kharmudai, who won Silver in Men’s Kumite (–60 kg) and Bronze in Men’s Kata; Ialamphang Kharkongor, who claimed Silver in Men’s Kumite (–75 kg); Savio Bakynsai Majaw, who secured Silver in the 13 Years Kumite (–40 kg) category; Fadrik Wanniang, who earned Silver in the Boys 12–13 Kumite (–45 kg); and Phidaiakashisha Lyngdoh, who took Silver in the Girls Junior Kumite (–53 kg).
Bronze medal winners included Arkindapura Buhphang, Aventinus George Mylliem, Gideon Tympuin, Naomi Y. Sylliang, Xenia Rose Nongsiej, Sandameka V. Langstieh, Daiarisa Nongrum, Carenia Rapthap, Carene Sohiong, Thekho Keyao, Adrial Kharjana, Wilson Mylliempdah, and Nathaniel Levin Suting, each contributing significantly to the State’s impressive tally.
The All Meghalaya Karate-Do Association lauded the athletes for their dedication and the coaches for their leadership, noting that the contingent’s collective performance reflects the steady rise of karate in the State.
The achievements, they said, will serve as an inspiration for young martial artists across Meghalaya.
