SHILLONG, Dec 6: The long-standing Harijan Colony relocation issue will be brought to a close, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong declared asserting that its resolution is the final barrier before an extensive redesign of Them Ïewmawlong can begin.
Speaking at a programme, he said the government is committed to settling the matter and opening the way for a transformation he believes will fundamentally change the face of the area.
Tynsong remarked that once the relocation process is completed, the redevelopment blueprint will move into full swing, adding that the locality could eventually mirror the vibrancy of “Times Square.”
The Deputy Chief Minister emphasised that the government has already pushed through hurdles that earlier administrations could not, and the Them Metor issue pending for years remains the last major obstacle to unlocking the planned overhaul.
To illustrate how long-dormant projects can finally take shape, he cited the Crowborough site, which lay stagnant for nearly four decades before being converted into a five-star hotel. The turnaround, he suggested, reflects what can be achieved when the state sustains its efforts despite resistance or delays.
Tynsong noted that several infrastructure commitments in Shillong are progressing in similar fashion, paced by negotiation, technical challenges and legal procedures. “The time will come, and it will happen,” he said confidently, stressing that the government’s direction is clear. Amid ongoing debates around the issue, he urged parents and youth to be wary of misinformation, warning that misleading narratives often surface when sensitive matters reach critical stages.
