SHILLONG, Dec 7: In a strong message centred on unity and inclusive development, North Shillong MLA Adelbert Nongrum on Saturday said society must reject activities that create unrest and instead safeguard both indigenous communities and non-tribals who were born and raised in the state, as all contribute collectively to Meghalaya’s progress.
Nongrum was speaking during a programme held at the Wahingdoh Dorbar Shnong community hall to distribute MLA scheme work orders for 2022-23 and 2024-25, amounting to Rs 5 crore.
The gathering was attended by traditional village leaders and representatives from youth groups, women’s organisations, Seng Khasi and other community bodies.
“We cannot divide those who are not Khasi or force them to leave the state. We must not fear discussions on growth and development. I stand with the VPP because it believes in integrity and transparency—values I have upheld even before joining the party,” he said.
Reaffirming his personal principles, Nongrum said he would rather “give up everything” than compromise on his core beliefs.
He also stressed the need to support the youths, so they do not fall prey to unemployment and social challenges. “We cannot allow our youths to drift towards vices. They must be guided and supported,” he said.
The MLA emphasised that as both a public representative and an individual, his focus is on shaping ideas, policies and service—not political one-upmanship.
Highlighting his earlier commitment, Nongrum said he had pledged to continue serving the people regardless of the election outcome, especially families from economically weaker sections. The release of work orders, he added, reflects a spirit of collective effort and transparent governance.
“I place responsibility before position. People elected me not for the post but for development,” he said.
The MLA then urged Rangbah Shnong (village leaders) to strictly supervise the works to avoid any compromise in quality and asked engineers to conduct regular inspections. “Do not issue completion certificates if the work is not satisfactory. I won the election through the love of the people, not by spending hundreds of crores,” he asserted.
Nongrum thanked the village leaders across the constituency for their cooperation in driving development initiatives and expressed hope for continued collaboration.
He also extended gratitude to residents of 3rd European Ward, Jail Road and Police Bazar for responding to his invitation to attend the programme. “When we work together, we can build a better future and ensure the welfare of the people. This is the first time such an event has taken place in the constituency,” he said.
The programme also featured a welcome address by the Wahingdoh Rangbah Shnong Ranjit Sing Marbaniang, along with songs and other cultural presentations.
