SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Government has circulated to the concerned departments the proposal of the 13 pressure groups on the introduction of a modified Inner Line Permit in the State to check influx, an official of the State Government said on Sunday.
He said that opinions of departments of the State Government like Law, Political and Tourism, would have to be obtained and the entire process was bound to take some time.
“A consolidated view can be formulated only after all the concerned departments give their views on it,” the official said.
In the last meeting, the pro-ILP pressure groups had opted for spot entry verification and they felt that the new mechanism which they had suggested would be more effective than the ILP system prevailing under the Eastern Bengal Frontier Regulation Act, 1873.
It was decided at the meeting that based on the recommendations of the pressure groups, the Government would do due diligence in studying the recommendations to put in place a comprehensive mechanism to address the problem as the Government had to ensure that the mechanism which would be implemented did not come into conflict with any of the existing laws passed by Parliament or with any provision enshrined in the Constitution.
