SHILLONG, Dec 8: The Meghalaya Commercial Truck Owners and Drivers Association (MCTODA) has expressed optimism that cement companies operating in the state will comply with the state government’s fresh notification revising transportation rates for cement and clinker—from the existing Rs 7 per metric ton per km to Rs 9 per metric ton per km.
Speaking to media persons on Monday, association spokesperson, Wanshuwa Nongtdu, said they are encouraged by the government’s decision to notify the revised rates on December 5, in line with their long-pending demands.
He added that they “firmly believe” the cement companies will no longer act negligently as in the past and will honour the new rates as mandated by the government.
Nongtdu also stressed the importance of cooperation among all stakeholders so that both truckers and companies benefit, while ensuring that the state receives the revenue it rightfully deserves.
He informed that the fresh notification was circulated in the association’s WhatsApp groups earlier in the day, although hard copies have not yet been collected.
“We are extremely happy because this achievement is the result of the hard work of our members and the collective support of the public,” he said, adding that the unity shown during the agitation played a crucial role in securing the revised rates.
Nongtdu also apologised to truck owners and drivers whose livelihood was affected during the agitation, particularly those transporting goods other than cement and clinker who were unable to operate their vehicles due to the protest.
Acknowledging the role of the state government, Nongtdu said the association “will not hesitate to praise” the efforts of Deputy Chief Ministers Prestone Tynsong and Sniawbhalang Dhar for actively following up on the issue.
He thanked Tynsong for ensuring the notification was issued and expressed appreciation for Dhar, who advised the association to meet the cement factory owners—an intervention that contributed to a positive resolution.
“As an association, we must acknowledge the government’s initiative to resolve the issue and address our demands,” he added.
Nongtdu also clarified that the allocation of 120 trucks per day for transportation is not meant solely for MCTODA members but also includes other truckers’ associations in Jaintia Hills.
