Bad day for NE women at football nationals

SHILLONG: Assam, Arunachal Pradesha and Mizoram all lost their respective matches at the Women’s National Championship football tournament on Sunday.

In Golaghat, hosts Assam lost to surprise package Pondicherry 2-1, according to the official All India Football Federation website, while Arunachal went down to Tamil Nadu 6-0.

Before Sunday’s result Assam were leading Group D on seven points and with a superior goal difference to Jharkhand, but the latter went on top on Sunday thanks to an 8-0 victory over Uttarakhand.

In Group B, held in Dibrugarh, Mizoram were narrowly beaten by Haryana 1-0. The North Easterners stay in third place on four points but are out of contention for a semifinal spot.

Leaders Orissa thrashed Gujarat 6-0, while second-placed Goa squeaked past Karnataka 1-0.

One team from each group will progress to the semifinal round.

On Monday, contenders Manipur will go up against Maharashtra in Group A in Bokakhat, while the two bottom teams from Group C – Sikkim and Tripura – go head to head in Dibrugarh.

The two North East teams from Group C are out of the running for a place in the last-four.
