TURA, Dec 9: A coalition of NGOs from Chokpot has raised strong objections to the use of limestone in the protection wall of the newly constructed Sangknigre RCC Bridge under the Chokpot Sub-Division in South Garo Hills.
They have described the material choice as unsafe, sub-standard and indicative of negligence on the part of those responsible for the project.
According to the NGOs, the use of limestone for a structure as crucial as a bridge protection wall poses significant risks due to its lack of durability when compared to  stronger materials such as concrete or granite. They allege that opting for limestone may be linked to corruption and a disregard for public safety.
The Sangknigre RCC Bridge, a long-awaited project aimed at improving connectivity and transportation in the region, has been welcomed by residents. However, the NGOs maintain that such projects are rarely sanctioned and must therefore be built with long-lasting and high-quality materials to ensure their sustainability.
Calling for immediate corrective action, the NGOs demanded that the concerned authorities replace the limestone with more suitable materials. They also urged both the contractor and the government departments involved to enforce stricter quality control measures and maintain greater transparency across all public works.
The NGOs further stated that they will continue to monitor the situation closely and are prepared to take additional steps if their concerns are not addressed.
