SHILLONG, Dec 9: Winter has officially arrived in Shillong and several other parts of Meghalaya. However, despite the familiar chill, temperatures across the Northeast, including Meghalaya, are projected to remain above normal this season.
In the state capital, residents are already gearing up for the colder days ahead. Shops selling winter wear are seeing a steady flow of people picking up jackets, sweaters and blankets, while many households have begun lighting the traditional chulah to stay warm during the cold evenings.
According to chief of IMD Shillong, Thangjalal Lhouvum, Meghalaya is expected to witness above-normal temperatures throughout December.
He assured that the IMD will continue issuing timely alerts to the State Government should any severe weather conditions arise.
Winter in Meghalaya usually spans from December to February. Currently, Shillong is experiencing minimum temperatures ranging between 7°C and 8°C.
It may be mentioned that there have been several occasions in the past when temperatures in December dipped below 0°C. The all-time lowest minimum temperature in Shillong was recorded at -3.3°C on December 30, 1983.
