Aizawl: The United Nations Mission team, comprising four UN agencies, arrived Aizawl on Monday on a mission to implement development projects jointly with the Mizoram government.
The team had visited the state earlier this year to carry out carry out ground inspection for the joint venture.
The team comprising of Dr Peter Kenmore, (FAO) as head, Dr M S Antonio Paliwal (FAO), Dr AB Negi (FAO), Paul Comyn (ILO), Anjana Chellani (ILO), Kalpana Tuwakley (UNDP), Sanjeev Kumar Gupta (UNDP), and Sandeep Tandon (UNIDO), had a meeting with state top officials headed by chief secretary L Tochhong this afternoon.
The UN team has sought cooperation with the state government for better implementation of the land-based development project New Land Use Policy already taken up by the state government.
Official sources said the idea to embark on joint venture is being initiated as the important objectives of the United Nations Organisation such as protection of the earth and environment, sustainable development utilising its resources, increasing economic production, raising living standard, creating permanent source of income for daily wage earners, preservation of water sources, preventing cattle from endemics, are similar to that of the objectives of the Mizoram government flagship programme NLUP, and also that the same are also being the objectives of the UN agencies individually.
“Different UN agencies in India have had carried out development works with other North Eastern states but individually than jointly. Therefore, if go by plan, the present one will be the first time India UN Mission on behalf of 27 UN Agencies in India embark on a project,” an official said.
Besides the nine NLUP line departments, today’s meeting was attended by officials from labour & employment, rural development, social welfare, trade & commerce and PWD.
The meeting discussed problems faced by the departments and how to solve them.
The UN Team will, during their stay in Mizoram, hold meeting with important government departments of the State and discuss on the steps to be taken ahead. (UNI)
