Shillong, Dec 11: Meghalaya took a decisive step toward reshaping its sporting future on Wednesday as Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma laid the foundation stone for the ambitious Mawkhanu Football Stadium Complex in New Shillong. Envisioned as a 40,000-seater arena and carrying an estimated cost of ₹732 crore, the project is being touted as the largest football-specific stadium planned anywhere in India.
The chief minister had earlier underscored the project’s symbolic value during the state budget presentation in March, calling it the cornerstone of Meghalaya’s dream to emerge as the “Football Capital of India.” That vision moved closer to reality today as work formally began on what is expected to become one of the region’s most significant sporting landmarks.
Designed by Collage Design Pvt Ltd, the stadium complex promises a blend of aesthetics, innovation and sustainability. The architects have emphasised that the structure will incorporate environmentally conscious and financially viable features, while also ensuring efficient functionality. Its exterior will reflect a contemporary design language inspired by the craftsmanship of Meghalaya’s bamboo artisans, creating a façade that is both modern and rooted in local tradition.
While football remains at the heart of the project — with the venue intended to meet international hosting standards — the complex has been planned as a versatile public space. The indoor arena will house a swimming pool, tennis and squash courts, a gymnasium, and other facilities, positioning the site as a hub for multisport engagement.
