SHILLONG: The East Khasi Hills police have registered a case against HNLC leader Sainkupar Nongtraw for giving an open threat to SP (City) Vivek Syiem.
East Khasi Hills district police chief M Kharkrang on Monday informed that he has directed the officer in charge of Sadar police station to register a case against Nongtraw.
Nongtraw, the outfit’s publicity secretary, has threatened the SP (City), accusing him of being more interested in providing security to foreign nationals of Nepalese origin in areas inhabited by them but failing to provide security to the Hynniewtrep people residing in Langpih and Blocks 1 & 2.
“How long will Syiem stay under protection of his gunmen and the police dept? He is not immortal. How many of the youths of the Hynniewtrep have suffered in the hands of this manipulative cop,” Nongtraw had stated in a recent statement.
The HNLC has also demanded the immediate release of HANM president Lamphrang Kharbani and four others who were arrested by the SWAT team of the police on May 2. The proscribed HNLC has warned that if they are not released immediately the outfit will call a total shutdown for four days in State and Central government offices on May 8, 9, 12 and 13.
The police arrested the HANM leader along with the others on suspicion of having links with HNLC. According to the police, demand notes of HNLC were seized from the vehicle of Kharbani.
“The press release is a cheap stunt by HNLC to gain publicity and only indicates their desperation,” Kharkrang said. He also asserted that the district police would continue to take action against anyone who would aid or abet any militant outfit.
