SHILLONG, Dec 13: The HSPDP will not contest upcoming elections for the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) or the State Assembly (MLA) in the Garo Hills region.
HSPDP president KP Pangniang said the party, a partner of the Garo National Council (GNC), resolved long ago not to extend its organisational presence into Garo Hills. Pangniang noted that the GNC made a reciprocal resolution not to operate in the Khasi-Jaintia Hills.
This electoral non-aggression pact stems from a shared political goal: the joint demand for separate statehood. “We want to support the demand for Garo land, and people of Garo Hills want to support us for a separate Khasi state,” Pangniang explained.
Since its inception, the HSPDP has focused its electoral efforts on the Khasi-Jaintia Hills, where it currently holds two MLA seats. Conversely, the GNC currently has no representation in the Assembly.
