London, Dec 15: Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has admitted that both he and his team are underachieving, insisting criticism from former club greats is inevitable as long as results fail to meet expectations.
United head into Monday’s Premier League clash against Bournemouth knowing a win would keep them inside the top six for a second consecutive week. Strikingly, it would be the first time they have managed that feat since the closing stages of the 2023–24 season.
While such a run would offer a small boost, it underlines how far standards have slipped from the club’s golden era under Sir Alex Ferguson, when United never finished lower than third after claiming their first league title in 1993.
That context has fuelled criticism from ex-players, most notably Paul Scholes, who suggested on The Good, The Bad & The Football podcast that Amorim is not the right fit for the club, arguing his tactical system clashes with United’s traditional use of wingers.Amorim said he has no issue with such scrutiny, conceding the criticism reflects the team’s current reality.“It’s normal,” he said. “As manager of Manchester United, I know we are underachieving. We should have more points, especially this season. I accept that,” said Amorim. (Agencies)
