SHILLONG, Dec 17: The youth wing of Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP), West Khasi Hills, on Wednesday urged Arts and Culture Minister Sanbor Shullai to upgrade the existing district library in Nongstoin into a District Multi-Convention Centre to cater to the growing social, cultural and educational needs of the district.
In a memorandum submitted to the minister, the organisation’s secretary Thomas Kharbnai said that while the District Library was established with noble intentions, it has witnessed minimal utilisation in recent years due to limited facilities and infrastructural constraints.
Highlighting the increasing population and the lack of a common venue in the district, Kharbnai said there is an urgent need for a modern, multipurpose centre that can host youth training programmes, cultural events, seminars, public meetings, exhibitions and recreational activities.
He said that upgrading the existing structure into a multi-convention centre would not only revitalise the library premises but also create a hub for the promotion of arts, culture, youth engagement, education and social development in West Khasi Hills.
According to the HSPDP youth wing, such a facility would greatly benefit students, artists, youth organisations, unemployed youths preparing for competitive examinations and the general public.
The organisation urged the government to allocate the required funds and provide technical support through the Arts and Culture department.
It also requested that the project be included in the state’s cultural and infrastructure development plan for 2025-26.
Expressing optimism, the HSPDP Youth Wing said it hopes that under the minister’s leadership, the long-standing aspiration of the people of West Khasi Hills would receive due consideration and be translated into action.
