SHILLONG, Dec 18: Meghalaya’s handloom traditions were featured in Paris at “Meghalaya à Vendôme,” an exclusive cultural event supported by Bhartiya Paris Club.
Led by designer and actress Sweety Jane Pala, the event presented the craftsmanship of the Khasi, Jaintia, and Garo communities to an international audience. Through a display of handwoven textiles and traditional garments, the event traced the state’s production process from silk cocoon to finished attire—a heritage rarely seen on Western fashion platforms.
Held in central Paris, the event drew representatives from global luxury fashion houses, including Cartier, Louis Vuitton, Prada, and Ralph Lauren. Their presence highlighted a growing international interest in sustainable and indigenous textile traditions.
The evening focused on Meghalaya’s intricate weaving techniques and cultural motifs, promoting artisanal excellence and the need to preserve India’s handloom legacy. It also facilitated a dialogue between traditional craftsmanship and contemporary global fashion.
The Bhartiya Paris Club supported the initiative as part of its efforts to enhance the global visibility of India’s regional heritage. “Meghalaya à Vendôme” served to position the state’s textile traditions within the international fashion landscape through cultural diplomacy.
