SHILLONG, Dec 18: Governor CH Vijayshankar has proposed that the state government commemorate the birth anniversary of Khasi literary pioneer U Soso Tham instead of his death anniversary.
Speaking at the 85th death anniversary observance at the U Soso Tham Auditorium on Wednesday, the Governor stated that celebrating a birth anniversary carries greater significance in honoring the legacy of eminent personalities. He added that the matter would be discussed with the Arts and Culture department and placed before the Cabinet for consideration.
Earlier, the Governor, alongside Arts and Culture Minister Sanbor Shullai and senior officials, laid wreaths at the bust of U Soso Tham.
During the event, Minister Sanbor Shullai announced that a bronze statue of the poet would be installed at the State Central Library. He highlighted Soso Tham’s invaluable literary contributions, specifically his celebrated work Ka Duitara Ksiar, noting his profound dedication to the Khasi community.
The Governor also felicitated members of U Soso Tham’s family and distributed prizes to winners of various competitions.
The programme was attended by the Principal Secretary of Arts and Culture, Fredrick R. Kharkongor, along with other government officials and dignitaries.
