SHILLONG, Dec 19: Traditional heads of various villages under Hima Sohra are facing administrative difficulties due to delay in the issuance of Sanad recognising the newly appointed Syiem by the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC).
The issue prompted a delegation of traditional heads of several villages to meet KHADC Chief Executive Member (CEM) Winston Tony Lyngdoh, along with Executive Member in charge of the Elaka Department Bah Denzil R Chen, on Friday.
The delegation urged the KHADC to expedite the process and issue the Sanad at the earliest.
Marremdor Syiem was confirmed as the new Syiem of Hima Sohra by the KHADC on November 3. Subsequently, he performed the ritual purification ceremony following the demise of the former Syiem, Pa’iem Freeman Sing Syiem, on November 5, 2025.
Speaking to the media after the meeting, Executive Member of the Dorbar Shnong Pdengshong, Hima Sohra, Wellborn Bynnud said the CEM and the Executive Member concerned assured the delegation that the matter would be expedited and that, all related provisions are under examination.
Bynnud said traditional village heads under the Hima require Sanads, issued by the Syiem to carry out day-to-day village administration. He added that in some cases, existing Sanads also need renewal, making it essential for the new Syiem to be formally empowered.
He further stated that the village leaders of Hima Sohra are now awaiting swift action from the KHADC so that the functioning of the Hima and its traditional governance system can continue without further disruption.
