SHILLONG, Dec 22: The Meghalaya unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has confirmed that it will contest the 2026 Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) elections.
Speaking on the sidelines of a pre-Christmas celebration at the state BJP office here on Monday, party leader Alexander Laloo Hek said on Monday that the BJP has begun the process of screening and assessing aspirants who have applied for tickets to contest the elections.
He said that the BJP may not be able to field candidates in all 29 constituencies of the GHADC. However, he asserted that the party would contest from selected constituencies, where it sees strong winning prospects.
“At present, we are carefully scrutinising the applications received from party members and aspirants who wish to contest the GHADC elections on BJP tickets. After a detailed assessment, the party will announce the names of the candidates and the number of constituencies we will contest,” Hek said.
He further said that the party has received a considerable number of applications from individuals keen on contesting the elections under the BJP banner, indicating a growing interest in the party ahead of the council polls.
On the question of a possible alliance with the National People’s Party (NPP) in the council elections, Hek said that the BJP remains open to cooperation, given that both parties are partners in the MDA-I and MDA-II governments.
However, he said that the decision on seat-sharing would depend on the performance of both parties in the elections.
The GHADC elections are expected to play a significant role in shaping the political landscape of Garo Hills ahead of the 2028 Assembly elections.
