Shillong, Dec 22: The United Democratic Party (UDP) has appealed to the Meghalaya government to make sincere efforts to bring the proscribed Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) back to the negotiation table, emphasising the importance of peace and security in the state.
The appeal follows a recent IED explosion on December 15 at the Dhar Construction Company camp near Shymplong village in East Jaintia Hills district. The blast, which damaged a water tanker but caused no injuries, has been linked to the HNLC and raised alarms about the outfit’s attempts to reassert its influence.
Speaking to reporters, UDP general secretary Titosstarwell Chyne noted that the HNLC had previously engaged in peace talks, with some initial progress achieved. “However, we lack detailed information on why the talks broke down or why the HNLC withdrew from the process,” Chyne said.
He stressed that, both personally and on behalf of the party, the UDP urges the HNLC leadership to return to dialogue for the greater good of peace and stability.
“I hope the state government will genuinely work to invite the HNLC to resume negotiations,” he added.
