SHILLONG, Dec 23: Residents of Nongjrong village under Mawkynrew C&RD Block have expressed serious concern over activities that could pollute the Umngot River, a major natural attraction and lifeline of the area.
Over the past few weeks, villagers have raised alarm over irresponsible acts by some individuals, particularly the washing of vehicles in the river. Residents said such activities have already begun to contaminate the water and pose a threat to the fragile ecosystem.
Videos showing vehicles being washed in the river have been shared by residents to highlight the issue. They said the matter has been brought to the notice of the shnong authorities, but alleged that no strict action has so far been taken to prevent vehicle washing in restricted areas.
Nongjrong, popularly known as the “village above the clouds,” is a well-known tourist destination, drawing visitors who come to witness the breathtaking view of the Umngot valley, especially during sunrise when golden rays light up the cloud-covered landscape.
In a recent decision aimed at regulating tourism, the village authorities announced that tourists will not be allowed to visit Nongjrong on Sundays starting January 2026.
Residents have urged the authorities to take immediate steps to protect the river and preserve the natural beauty that sustains both the environment and tourism in the area.
