PESHAWAR, Dec 24: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi announced that preparations are underway for a street movement across the province to demand the release of jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan.
Speaking to the Insaf Students Federation (ISF), Afridi said the movement is being organized on Khan’s directives and called on youth to remain prepared at all levels. He emphasized that the Constitution guarantees the right to peaceful protest and stressed that the ISF has consistently followed a nonviolent, democratic approach.
Afridi accused anti-state political forces of undermining state institutions and democracy for personal gain, warning students to stay vigilant against conspiracies, propaganda, and attempts to provoke them.
He criticized corrupt elements for fostering political intolerance and chaos, which he said has damaged democratic norms. Afridi reiterated that the struggle for freedom will continue strictly within the framework of the Constitution and law, with readiness maintained until Khan’s next directive.
Imran Khan, 73, has been in jail since August 2023, facing multiple corruption cases following his ouster from power in April 2022.
Recently, he and his wife, Bushra Bibi, were each sentenced to 17 years in the Toshakhana 2 corruption case. Afridi’s announcement highlights PTI’s continued mobilization of youth and supporters to demand Khan’s release, while maintaining a commitment to peaceful political action. (PTI)
