SHILLONG, Dec 26: The Voice of the People Party (VPP), Nongkrem constituency, has strongly condemned the threats issued by the banned militant outfit Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) against VPP leaders, including party president and Nongkrem MLA, Ardent Basaiawmoit.
In a statement issued on Friday, VPP Nongkrem Constituency secretary H. Riang asserted that the threats are a serious attempt to intimidate democratically elected representatives and undermine the democratic process. He called the actions unacceptable, demanding that those responsible be held accountable.
The threats, which have disturbed party members and citizens across society, were unexpected, the VPP leader said, noting that the development reflects a lack of responsibility toward the interests of the Khasi community and the larger public. “As supporters of democracy, we pray for the safety of our leaders… so that they can continue serving the people and the indigenous community without fear,” Riang stated.
The controversy escalated after the HNLC earlier this week warned Basaiawmoit against behaving like a “Blei Khyndew” (God of the Earth). The militant group criticized the MLA for opposing its alleged interference in Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) affairs, specifically regarding delays in issuing the Sanad to the elected Syiem of Hima Sohra.
Basaiawmoit has responded defiantly to the alleged threats, stating he is prepared to face any consequence, including risk to his life, if it results in better governance for the people of Meghalaya.
He maintained that the VPP’s leadership of the KHADC was a result of the people’s mandate and was not influenced by any militant organisation. Basaiawmoit reiterated the party’s commitment to reform and accountability, particularly within traditional institutions. He stressed that raising concerns over issues, such as those within the traditional institution of Hima Sohra, should not be misconstrued as provocation, but viewed in the larger public interest.
