SHILLONG: A three-tier security system will be put in place to ensure full-proof security and safety of the counting centre at Polo on May 16 when counting of votes for the Lok Sabha elections in the State will take place.

East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police M Kharkrang on Saturday informed that the first tier of security would be provided by the CRPF personnel, while the second and third tiers would be covered by armed personnel of the State Police and the District police, respectively.

“We can only say that we will provide full security on the day of counting,” he added.

Hundreds of security personnel would be employed to guard the thirteen counting centres.

The Meghalaya Election Department has already asserted that it is well prepared for the ‘big day’ when fate of ten candidates for the two Lok Sabha seats of Shillong and Tura will be known.

CCTV cameras would be put up in all the counting centres across the State for security monitoring.

Counting of votes in the State will begin at 8 am and the name of the winning candidates would be officially announced by 5 pm, the election department said.

Meanwhile, the respective district administrations have been entrusted with the responsibility of providing general security in the State.
