SHILLONG: The Meghalaya State Commission for Women has sought a high-level probe by the State Government into the incident of assault on several girls in Tura, West Garo Hills.

In a statement issued to the media on Saturday, Chairperson of the Commission, Theilin Phanbuh, said that ‘in view of the serious incident, the State Government should conduct an immediate inquiry into the incident and book the culprits according to the law.

The Commission said it has viewed with serious concern regarding reports about self- styled vigilantes abducting, confining and torturing several girls.

The Commission vehemently condemned the ‘dastardly act of brutality’ which according to the Commission is inhuman in nature.

“Moreover, the wrong confinement and torturing of the victims (all women) for several days on the pretext of reforming them but instead illegally trying to take the law into their own hands is very wrong,” Phanbuh said.
