SHILLONG, Dec 30: Shillong experienced one of the coldest days of the season on Tuesday, with the minimum temperature dropping to 5.5°C, ushering in a sharp cold wave across the city.
The biting chill was compounded by dense fog and intermittent drizzle, prompting residents to rely on heaters, warm clothing, and traditional fireplaces to stay warm amid the sudden temperature plunge.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), dense fog is likely to persist across parts of Meghalaya over the next five days, especially during early mornings and late evenings, potentially reducing visibility.
Weather conditions may become unstable in the Khasi and Jaintia Hills, with thunderstorms and possible hail expected on January 3 and 4. East Khasi Hills faces the highest risk of such activity during this period.
The five-day forecast indicates predominantly dry weather, with shallow to moderate fog at isolated spots, mainly in the mornings. Dense fog could occur in pockets, impacting visibility and travel.
Minimum temperatures are expected to fall gradually by 2–3°C, with further drops of 3–4°C possible in isolated areas. Maximum temperatures may dip slightly by 2–3°C, sustaining the winter grip.
For Shillong and nearby areas, mornings will likely feature fog or mist, giving way to clearer skies later. Daytime highs should stay in 15-20°C range, while nights could dip to single digits.
The IMD advises caution for residents and commuters during early hours due to fog-reduced visibility, as dry and stable weather persists through the year-end.
Despite occasional cold spells like this, the IMD has forecasted above-normal temperatures for Meghalaya’s winter season overall. Many December days in Shillong have featured sunny mornings and afternoons.
