London, Jan 4: Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim struck a measured yet revealing tone after his side battled to a 1-1 draw against Leeds United at Elland Road, praising his players’ resilience while making pointed remarks about his position and responsibilities at the club.
Short of several key players due to injuries and AFCON commitments, United were forced to dig deep after falling behind in the second half. Matheus Cunha quickly hauled the visitors back into the contest and later went close to sealing all three points, only to see a late curling effort crash against the post.
Speaking after the match, Amorim said he was largely encouraged by the performance, highlighting improved control compared to recent outings.
“I think we played well. We had more control in this game than we showed against Wolverhampton,” he told TNT Sports. “That is important because you can prepare the next week and learn from the mistakes from the last game.”
Amorim felt United dealt effectively with Leeds’ strengths, particularly their threat from set-pieces and second balls.
“They are really strong and really quick up front, but I think we controlled them quite well. We had opportunities to win the game. We are losing games in the details.
Their goal came from one moment in transition when we were controlling the match, but we managed to get back in. Last year this game would have been completely different,” he added, admitting frustration at not taking all three points.
The United boss also defended his younger players after another outing that featured academy talent. Amorim stressed that individual errors are part of the game, regardless of age or experience.
“Ayden and Leny are really young, but mistakes can happen to anyone — even to someone like Harry Maguire who is very experienced. If we score the second goal and win, nobody is talking about the Leeds goal,” he said. (Agencies)ww
