PREMIER LEAGUE

MANCHESTER, Jan 4: A dramatic Premier League Sunday delivered late equalisers, title-defining goals and contrasting emotions across the table, as Manchester United were held at Leeds, Arsenal tightened their grip at the summit, Newcastle extended their winning run and Brentford enjoyed a statement away victory.

Cunha saves point

Matheus Cunha once again proved decisive for Manchester United, striking a swift equaliser as Ruben Amorim’s side were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw against an energetic Leeds United at a hostile Elland Road.
United fell behind midway through the second half when Leeds, unbeaten in seven league games, finally broke through. Brenden Aaronson showed pace and composure to burst past Ayden Heaven before drilling a low finish into the far corner in the 62nd minute.
The response was immediate. Just three minutes later, Cunha latched onto a pass from substitute Joshua Zirkzee and calmly slid the ball beyond Lucas Perri to level the scores, registering his third goal in five matches. The Brazilian nearly turned match-winner late on, curling an effort from distance that struck the outside of the post.

Rice brace fuels title charge

Declan Rice delivered a commanding performance as Arsenal came from behind to beat Bournemouth, extending their lead at the top of the Premier League and maintaining their relentless march towards a first league title since 2003–04.
The Gunners were stunned early when Gabriel’s misplaced pass gifted Evanilson the opener for Bournemouth. However, the defender redeemed himself before the interval, reacting sharply to smash home a rebound after Gabriel Martinelli’s shot was blocked.
Rice took charge after the break. The England midfielder put Arsenal ahead with a composed finish from the edge of the box following neat build-up involving Viktor Gyökeres and Martin Ødegaard. He then completed his brace — his first in the Premier League — by converting Bukayo Saka’s cutback, capping a dominant return from injury.
Teenager Eli Junior Kroupi reignited Bournemouth’s hopes with a fine long-range strike, but Arsenal held firm to secure their fifth straight league win.

Guimarães leads by example

Bruno Guimarães once again led Newcastle United from the front as the Magpies claimed a 2-0 win over Crystal Palace at St James’ Park to make it back-to-back Premier League victories.
After Palace frustrated Newcastle for long spells, the breakthrough arrived in the 71st minute when Guimarães headed home following sustained pressure and a series of substitutions by Eddie Howe. Malick Thiaw sealed the result soon after with a second from a corner.Palace had their moments, with Nick Pope producing key saves, but Newcastle’s persistence paid off as they began 2026 in the same manner they ended 2025 — with three points.

Thiago hat-trick lifts Bees into top seven

Igor Thiago stole the spotlight with a sensational hat-trick as Brentford thrashed Everton 4-2, recording just their third away win of the season and surging into the Premier League’s top seven.
The Brazilian forward was at the heart of everything, opening the scoring early before Brentford exploded after the interval. Nathan Collins doubled the lead, and Thiago struck twice more to complete a superb treble, leaving Everton shell-shocked.Although Beto and Thierno Barry pulled goals back for the hosts, Brentford’s attacking quality proved decisive, with Thiago emerging as the clear standout performer.

Spurs frustration, Sunderland delight

Tottenham Hotspur were left to reflect on another disappointing draw as Sunderland continued their impressive campaign with a spirited 1-1 result in north London.Boos echoed around the stadium at full-time, directed at Spurs and manager Thomas Frank, as the home side once again failed to see out a lead. Sunderland, by contrast, were warmly applauded by their travelling supporters. (Agencies)
