WTT Feeder Series 2026: Divyanshi, Anusha reach quarters

Vadodara, Jan 10: Youngster Divyanshi Bhowmick and the experienced Anusha Kutumbale recorded stunning wins to reach the women’s singles quarterfinals of the WTT Feeder Series here on Saturday. In the women’s singles pre-quarterfinals, Divyanshi came back from a game down to beat second seed Park Gahyeon of Korea Republic 8-11, 11-9, 11-9, 13-11, while Anusha defeated sixth seed Lee Zion 11-6, 11-6, 11-9 to reach the quarterfinals. Divyanshi will now face Syndrela Das, the U-17 girls singles champion in just concluded WTT Youth Contender. The eighth seed Syndrela defeated qualifier Yashini Sivasankar 11-9, 11-4, 12-10 in the other Round of 16 clash. Anusha will be up against fourth seed Yashaswini Ghorpade, who blanked Sayali Wani 11-3, 11-9, 11-5. However, junior national champion Hansini Mathan’s run in the tournament came to an end after she went down against another Korean player Ryu Hanna. The 16-year-old, who had upset third seed Yoo Yerin on Friday, had managed to win two of the first three games but the experienced Korean banked on her experience to win 9-11, 11-5, 6-11, 11-5, 11-5. In the men’s singles category, men’s top seed Manush Shah, third seed Snehit Suravajjula and and fourth seed Edward LY of Canada eased into the last eight with comfortable victories. (PTI)

Swimmers Ashmita, Dhrupad help Karnataka top medals tally in KIBG

Diu, Jan 10: Swimming powerhouse Karnataka ended on top of the medal standings at the Khelo India Beach Games as Ashmita Chandra and Dhrupad Ramakrishna clinched the women’s and men’s 5km Open Water event gold medals respectively at Ghoghla Beach here on Saturday. Karnataka topped the standings with three gold, all from Open Water swimming, two silver and six bronze to win the overall crown in the second edition of the event. Tamil Nadu finished second with three gold, two silver and three bronze while last edition’s winners Manipur finished third with three gold, two silver and two bronze. Madhya Pradesh finished fourth with a tally of three gold, one silver and one bronze, thanks to their exploits in pencak silat. (PTI)

Coco Gauff beats Iga Swiatek in US-Poland semifinal at United Cup

Sydney, Jan 10: Coco Gauff beat No. 2-ranked Iga Swiatek 6-4, 6-2 to force a mixed-doubles match to decide the United Cup semifinal between the United States and Poland on Saturday. Fourth-ranked Gauff, the French Open champion, evened the matchup at 1-1 at the team event after Hubert Hurkacz beat Taylor Fritz 7-6 (1), 7-6 (2) in the singles opener at Ken Rosewall Arena. It was Gauff’s fourth straight victory over Swiatek, the Wimbledon champion. Gauff and teammate Christian Harrison will face Swiatek and Hurkacz in mixed doubles. The winning team will face Switzerland in Sunday’s final. The Swiss advanced when Belinda Bencic combined with Jakub Paul in the deciding mixed doubles to defeat Belgium’s Elise Mertens and Zizou Bergs 6-3, 0-6, 10-5. Bencic has won all four of her singles matches and four in mixed doubles this week in the team event. Paul, who won just six tour-level doubles matches last year, hit several down-the-line winners at crucial moments to lead Switzerland into the final. Earlier, Bencic extended her undefeated season-opening singles streak when she beat Mertens 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (0) to put Switzerland ahead 1-0. But Stan Wawrinka, who will retire at the end of this season, was beaten 6-3, 6-7 (4), 6-3 by Bergs to send the match to a mixed doubles decider at Ken Rosewall Arena. (AP)
