Dhaka, Jan 10: Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president Aminul Islam Bulbul on Friday said the board is still awaiting a response from the International Cricket Council (ICC) regarding its concerns over playing matches in India during the upcoming T20 World Cup, reaffirming that Bangladesh’s position remains unchanged.
Bangladesh have expressed reluctance to play in India for the tournament, which begins on February 7, and have requested that their matches be shifted to co-host Sri Lanka, citing security concerns. The board’s apprehensions followed the release of pacer Mustafizur Rahman from IPL side Kolkata Knight Riders under instructions from the BCCI, amid reports of attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh.
“We haven’t received any reply from the ICC yet. We have provided all the attachments and proofs supporting our concerns,” Bulbul told reporters in Dhaka. He added that the BCB has clearly communicated its stance to the global governing body, noting that shifting matches to another Indian city would not resolve the issue. “Any alternate Indian venue is still an Indian venue. No unilateral decision can be taken; we must abide by the government’s directive. Our position remains the same as it was a few days ago.”
Bulbul said the board will await the ICC’s response before deciding on the next steps. “I cannot comment on what we will do if we aren’t allowed to play in Sri Lanka unless the ICC responds,” he added. Bangladesh are currently scheduled to play three group-stage matches in Kolkata and one in Mumbai. The BCB chief also said he was unaware of reports suggesting Hyderabad and Chennai as potential replacement venues, noting that the board might learn more early next week.Despite the off-field uncertainties, Bulbul expressed confidence in Bangladesh’s ability to perform, particularly in sub-continental conditions. “Bangladesh is a strong team in world cricket. We have reached the 2015 ODI World Cup quarterfinals and the CT semifinals,” he said. (PTI)
