Imphal: A local committee today said they would launch econonmic blockade on national highway 53 (Imphal-Jiribam-Silchar) from August 14 to August 30 to press their demand for conversion of Jiribam sub-division in Imphal east district of Manipur into a full-fledged revenue district.

A spokesman of the Jiribam District Demand Committee (JDDC) told newspersons that they would block movement of trucks and other vehicles carrying essential items during the economic blockade.

Official sources said security personnel deployed along the highway were alerted to facilitate movement of trucks carrying essential items to Imphal during the proposed economic blockade.

Jiribam sub-division falls under the Imphal east district but sub divisional headquarters Jiribam is about 222 km west of Imphal, sources said.

Another committee, Sadar Hills District Demand Committee (SHDDC) had also launched economic blockade on Imphal-Dimapur national highway 39 since August 1 last to press its demand for conversion of Sadar Hills area in Senapati district of Manipur into a full-fledged revenue district. Official sources said the state cabinet had met twice in the past one week to discuss the issues raised by JDDC and SHDDC but no decision could be taken. Sources said some Naga organisations, including United Naga Council and Naga Youth Front, strongly opposed conversion of Kuki-majority Sadar Hills area into a full fledged revenue district. Nagas are in majority in Senapati district. (PTI)
