SHILLONG, Jan 13: In a development related to the death of Bipul Inghi, the East Khasi Hills Police on Tuesday stated that preliminary investigations reveal that the deceased fell inside a room during a party with his friends on the evening of January 6.
East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police (SP) Vivek Syiem said the findings suggest that the incident occurred during a social gathering attended by Inghi and his friends, who are also staff members of North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), at one of the staff quarters.
According to the SP, statements from all those present indicate that Inghi, who was in an inebriated state during the party, fell and sustained injuries as a result. “We are still awaiting the post-mortem report from Nongpoh to confirm the nature of the injuries and to determine whether the death was homicidal or the result of an accidental fall,” Syiem said. He added that once the report is received, it will be carefully examined and compared with the findings of the investigation.
Clarifying earlier reports, the SP stated that Inghi was a casual employee of the School of Technology at NEHU and not a security guard. Although he had worked as a security guard until 2014, he was presently engaged as a casual staff member at the School of Technology, NEHU.
Inghi sustained injuries after falling inside a staff quarter room on the NEHU campus at around 7:30 pm on January 6. He was subsequently taken by his friends to NEIGRIHMS, from where he was referred to Nazareth Hospital and later to Supercare Hospital in Shillong, where he succumbed to his injuries on January 8.
The SP informed that the case has currently been registered as one of unnatural death.
“The investigation is ongoing to ascertain what more transpired on the night of January 6 inside the NEHU campus,” he said, adding that the probe is being conducted by the officer-in-charge of Mawkynroh Police Outpost. A decision on whether to reclassify the case as murder will be taken if evidence suggesting foul play emerges from the post-mortem report and other findings.
