TURA, Jan 18: An RTI inquiry has revealed 52 illegal quarries operating across Garo Hills, alongside the issuance of unauthorized trading licenses by the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC).
The RTI, filed by Tura MDC Bernard Marak, also exposed the issuance of illegal trading licenses (TNTs) to traders within the Tura constituency. “This is a warning to illegal traders entering Tura without a license or with fake documentation. Garo Hills is protected under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution, which must be honored by all entities,” Marak said.
The MDC stated that both the district administration and the CEM of GHADC have been informed of these violations. He further highlighted the human cost of unregulated mining, citing a recent fatality at an illegal site “…negligence led to a loss of life at an illegal quarry in Rajabala. The death of Dilseng M Sangma is a wake-up call. All illegal trading in Garo Hills must stop,” Marak warned.
