Guwahati, Jan 19: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday paid rich tributes to the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) on the occasion of its Raising Day, lauding the force for its courage, professionalism and unwavering dedication in serving the nation during times of crisis.

Taking to social media platform X, the Chief Minister said that the NDRF remains ever ready to respond to disasters and emergencies, adding that its swift and selfless actions have saved countless lives across the country.

“On the NDRF Raising Day, we salute the courage, professionalism, and dedication of the National Disaster Response Force. Ever ready in times of crisis, NDRF’s swift response and selfless service have saved countless lives across the nation,” CM Sarma wrote.

Observed annually, NDRF Raising Day marks the establishment of the force, which was constituted under the Disaster Management Act, 2005, as a specialised unit to deal with natural and man-made disasters. Since its inception, the NDRF has emerged as the country’s foremost disaster response agency, earning national and international recognition for its efficiency and humane approach.

Equipped with highly trained personnel drawn primarily from the Central Armed Police Forces, the NDRF is adept at handling a wide range of emergencies, including floods, cyclones, earthquakes, landslides, industrial accidents and chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear (CBRN) disasters.

Over the years, the force has played a crucial role in major rescue and relief operations across India, often working in extremely challenging conditions. In addition to disaster response, the NDRF has also focused on capacity building, community awareness and disaster preparedness, conducting mock drills and training programmes to strengthen local response mechanisms.

Its teams have frequently been deployed beyond India’s borders as well, contributing to international humanitarian assistance and disaster relief missions. Leaders from across the political spectrum and senior officials have extended greetings to NDRF personnel on the occasion, acknowledging their discipline, bravery and commitment to public service.

The Raising Day serves as a reminder of the critical role played by the NDRF in safeguarding lives and reinforcing India’s disaster management framework, while also honouring the sacrifices made by its personnel in the line of duty.
