SHILLONG, Jan 20: Cabinet Minister and BJP MLA Sanbor Shullai has urged the Centre to initiate cultural and tourism development schemes in Meghalaya, with a focus on preserving indigenous traditions and generating employment.
Shullai raised the issue during a meeting with Union Tourism and Culture Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat in New Delhi, where the BJP state president and other senior party leaders were also present.
According to a press release, Shullai requested the Centre to introduce cultural schemes to safeguard the Seng Khasi and Seng Raid traditions, along with the Songsarek Garo culture.
He proposed the establishment of a cultural heritage traditional market at the Mawlai CRPF camp to showcase the cultural diversity of the Northeast and strengthen cultural tourism.
He also sought tourism development schemes for the South Shillong constituency alongside the proposed ropeway project, while stating that such initiatives would create direct and indirect employment opportunities for the local population.
The meeting focused on integrating cultural preservation with tourism-driven economic development in Meghalaya.
