DUBAI, Jan 23: Iran’s top prosecutor, Mohammad Movahedi, on Friday denied US President Donald Trump’s repeated claims that he had halted the execution of 800 detained protesters, calling the assertion “completely false.”
The denial comes amid ongoing nationwide protests in Iran, with activists reporting at least 5,002 deaths, including demonstrators, government-affiliated personnel, children, and civilians.
Over 26,800 people have been detained, though the true death toll may be higher due to internet blackouts and restricted information.
Tensions between the US and Iran remain high as the USS Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group and accompanying ships move toward the Middle East.
Trump has suggested the military buildup is “just in case” action is needed, though no strikes have occurred.
Iran’s government condemned European Parliament criticism of its crackdown, warning that any intervention targeting its security forces would provoke reciprocal measures.
Meanwhile, Iran showcased Shahed drones during the “Day of the Guardian,” signaling its regional military capabilities and issuing a veiled threat to Israel.
Analysts note the escalating crisis underscores both internal unrest and rising US-Iran geopolitical tensions. (AP)
