SHILLONG, Jan 25: The Ri-Bhoi district administration is closely monitoring Maikhuli following frequent border skirmishes between residents of Meghalaya and Assam.
Tension recently flared over the installation of electric poles by the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL). This follows a December incident where individuals from Assam allegedly defaced an MGNREGA foundation stone in the village, leading to a heated confrontation.
Ri-Bhoi Deputy Commissioner Abhilash Baranwal stated that the latest issue has been resolved, with the poles erected the following day without further disruption. He noted that certain “anti-social elements” have been attempting to exploit the situation to create unrest.
To prevent further conflict, a peace committee comprising residents from both states has been formed. All developmental projects are now discussed by the committee before implementation.
“Developmental programmes are only carried out if both sides agree,” Baranwal said, adding that the committee had specifically approved the installation of the electric poles.
