SHILLONG, Jan 25: Meghalaya Police has intensified security measures throughout the Eastern Range in view of the Republic Day celebrations.
DIGP (Eastern Range), Shillong, VS Rathore said on Sunday that police personnel would remain vigilant throughout the night, with intensive naka checking and patrolling already underway at various locations.
When asked about any potential threats from banned outfits, the DIGP stated that Meghalaya Police is fully prepared to handle any situation and that comprehensive arrangements have been put in place.
Meanwhile, Shillong is all set to celebrate Republic Day with enthusiasm. The official state-level function will be held at Polo Ground, where Meghalaya Governor Chandrashekhar H. Vijayashankar will unfurl the National Flag.
The National Flag will also be hoisted at various government offices across the city. Several localities and community groups have planned their own flag-hoisting ceremonies, along with bike rallies and other programmes to mark the occasion.
In a marked departure, no entertainment programmes are scheduled at Khyndai Lad this year.
It may be recalled that for the past decade or so, Shillong has witnessed massive crowds during Republic Day and Independence Day celebrations, as large numbers of people, along with friends and families, come out to join the festivities. Popular spots such as Ward’s Lake and Ka Phan Nonglait Park typically remain packed throughout the day.
Several areas of the city and key government installations have been illuminated for the occasion.
As part of the Republic Day festivities, the Shillong Flower Show 2026 will be held at Lok Bhavan Garden, commencing on January 26 and continuing through January 27.
