SHILLONG, Jan 31: In a significant crackdown on drug trafficking, the Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) of East Jaintia Hills Police seized suspected heroin worth around Rs 20 lakh and arrested four persons during a coordinated naka operation at the Umkiang Police Patrol Post under Lumshnong Police Station on Friday.
Acting on credible intelligence regarding an oil tanker allegedly transporting illegal narcotics, the ANTF team swiftly set up a checkpoint and intercepted the vehicle (AS11DC1200). Upon inspection, police recovered four soap boxes containing approximately 45.5 grams of heroin, along with four mobile phones, from the accused.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Shymal Boro of Kamrup district, Matab Uddin of Cachar, Ataur Rohman of Karimganj and Biren Singha of Hailakandi district in Assam.
Police suspect that the apprehended persons are part of a larger organised crime syndicate involved in the interstate transportation of drugs.
Meanwhile, East Jaintia Hills Superintendent of Police Vikash Kumar said the operation was carried out based on specific intelligence inputs and reflects the district police’s continued efforts to curb narcotics trafficking.
“Based on credible intelligence, our Anti-Narcotics Task Force conducted a naka at Umkiang and successfully intercepted the tanker. The recovery indicates possible links to an organised interstate drug network, and we are pursuing the investigation to identify other members involved,” Kumar stated.
Meanwhile, a case has been registered at Lumshnong Police Station under relevant provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, and further investigation is under way to trace the supply chain and potential associates.
