SHILLONG, Feb 1: Street vendors relocated from the footpath near the Civil Hospital to a designated vending area at the PWD complex, Barik, have acknowledged the state government and the Shillong Municipal Board for providing an alternative space to continue their livelihood.
The relocation follows repeated complaints from pedestrians over footpaths near the Civil Hospital being occupied by vendors, causing inconvenience and congestion in the busy area.
Vendors at the new site said the space is relatively clean and offers basic protection from rain and sunlight, which they expect will be helpful in the coming months.
Some stated that having a designated area has given them clarity and a sense of security to carry on their business.
Around 30 vendors are currently operating from the new vending zone, selling a range of items. While they said earnings are modest at present, they expressed hope that customers will continue to patronise them at the new location, as they did earlier.
The shift has resulted in the clearing of footpaths near the Civil Hospital, improving pedestrian access and movement in the area.
