Mukul should resign for ‘twin’ defeat: NPP
New Delhi: As an immediate fallout of Congress defeat in the prestigious Tura Lok Sabha seat, the opposition NPP has demanded that Chief Minister Mukul Sangma should resign forthwith owning moral responsibility or else he will be ousted by his own party legislators soon since there is a strong undercurrent against him in the party.
The NPP’s Meghalaya unit president Dr WR Kharlukhi said that the Chief Minster should also resign for the victory of Vincent H Pala from Shillong Lok Sabha seat “since he was not in favour of the sitting MP’s candidature.”
“It is no secret that Sangma, some of his cabinet colleagues, Parliamentary Secretaries, MLAs, MDCs were working against Pala,” Dr. Kharlukhi said in statement.
He also cautioned that in view of the changed situation at the Centre with the BJP-led NDA coming back to power with a massive mandate, Mukul will be thrown out of his position unceremoniously by his own party legislators.
Meanwhile, party sources said that with anger building up within the Congress, which suffered its worst-ever defeat, party president Sonia Gandhi and vice-president Rahul Gandhi might offer to resign at a meeting of the Congress Working Committee to be held here on May 19, sources said.
The Congress-ruled Chief Ministers including Dr Sangma might also tender their resignations owning moral responsibility even though all resignations were likely to be rejected, it added.
Pointing out that the Chief Minister has lost face with the defeat of Congress candidate Daryl Momin’s at the hands of PA Sangma, the NPP president said that it was a double loss for the Chief Minister since he was not in favour of Pala’s candidature nor he campaigned for Shillong MP.
The Chief Minister should resign for his twin defeat, he added.
