SHILLONG, Feb 3: Two major Smart City infrastructure projects in Shillong remain closed to the public months after their completion, raising concerns over the government’s delay in operationalising key urban assets.
The Polo Shopping Complex, a commercial hub built at a cost of approximately Rs 100 crore, was inaugurated by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in July last year. Despite the high-profile opening, the facility is not yet functional. Sources indicate the government floated tenders twice to appoint a management agency, but the outcome of the process remains unclear.
Similarly, the Phase-I redevelopment of the Laitumkhrah Municipal Market is also finished but remains under lock and key. The market project is part of a larger urban renewal plan with a total estimated cost of Rs 38 crore.
The continued closure of these facilities, despite significant financial investment and the completion of construction work, has sparked criticism regarding the delay in decision-making and the state’s inability to put these finished projects to use.
