SHILLONG, Feb 3: In a significant step toward alleviating chronic traffic congestion in the capital, Deputy Chief Minister in charge of PWD (Roads), Prestone Tynsong, on Tuesday highlighted the Barik Flyover as a priority project, revealing that the state government is actively engaging with central agencies to extend the proposed Rilbong-Anjalee flyover up to Barik Junction for smoother public movement.
Tynsong disclosed that on Monday, he held a key meeting with the Managing Director of the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL), where they discussed the urgent requirement to construct and extend the flyover to Barik. This extension aims to better facilitate traffic flow in one of Shillong’s most congested corridors. He further shared that detailed deliberations covered other major road initiatives, including the proposed High-Speed Corridor from Umiam to Malidor, the Shillong-Dawki Road, and the Phulbari-Agia Road.
Expressing strong optimism, the Deputy Chief Minister noted that timely completion of these projects would greatly reduce travel times and enhance overall connectivity for the people of Meghalaya.
In a separate interaction with the Director General of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), discussions focused on upgrading several temporary bridges across the state to permanent cement concrete structures.
Tynsong described the talks as highly encouraging, emphasising that these conversions would markedly improve the safety and longevity of the state’s road network.
