SHILLONG, Feb 5: NPP National President and Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Thursday denied reports of a split within the party’s Manipur unit, asserting that the party remains united despite the resignation of some members.
Clarifying the party’s decision to rejoin the Manipur government on Wednesday, Sangma said confusion was being created between the party’s participation in the government and reports of a split.
“There is no split. NPP is absolutely where it is. Our legislators and the party are together,” he said.
Sangma explained that while a few individuals had left to form a separate group, it is neither registered nor recognised by the Election Commission of India (ECI). He noted that the NPP is a recognised national party and that individual departures do not change its identity.
Addressing the situation in Manipur, Sangma noted that the state has suffered significantly over the last two years due to violence, displacement, and economic hardship.
While the NPP had previously withdrawn support during the height of the crisis, Sangma said the party reassessed its stance following a decline in violence and the transition from President’s Rule to the formation of a popular government.
“Peace is a long process, but violence has reduced,” Sangma said. He added that after consulting with party legislators, the NPP decided to support the new government to help restore normalcy. “As a political party, we felt it was our responsibility to work with the people of Manipur to bring back stability,” he stated.
