MAWKYRWAT, Feb 5: Mawkyrwat MLA Renikton L Tongkhar on Thursday inspected the Greater Mawkyrwat Combine Water Supply Scheme (GMCWSS), the largest water project in South West Khasi Hills District, which is now 90% complete.
Sanctioned at Rs 59 crore under the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM), the scheme will provide water to eight villages: Mawlangwir, Mawten, Mawkyrwat, Wahsiej, Sohkhyllam, Mawmerang, Nongeitser, and Hiland.
Accompanied by Public Health Engineering (PHE) Executive Engineer K Nongbsaw and other officials, Tongkhar visited the Water Treatment Plant at Mawten village.
Speaking to reporters, Tongkhar expressed satisfaction with the progress and urged contractors to complete the remaining works. He also noted that the Government of India is expected to release further JJM funds shortly.
The MLA confirmed that the water source is sufficient to ensure a year-round supply for all eight villages. He also appealed to residents in the Wahsiej area, where the dam is located, to protect the environment and refrain from deforestation to preserve the water source.
Executive Engineer K Nongbsaw confirmed the 90% progress and stated that the department has set a target to complete the project within 2026.
