TURA, Feb 5: The Williamnagar Bar Association has submitted a representation to the GHADC Secretary seeking a transparent selection process along with a notification and an advertisement of the vacancy, for the appointment of a full time Judge for the District Council Court in the GHADC.
The association expressed concern, pointing out that the GHADC was seeking recommendations from a particular district or area only instead of inviting open applications from all over Garo Hills.
The association, while suggesting that a selection protocol or Standard Operating Procedure (SOP), similar to the Meghalaya Higher Judicial Service (MHJS) must be adopted, felt that the eligibility criteria for the appointment should be that the applicant must be a bonafide Garo and a permanent resident of Garo Hills within the jurisdiction of the GHADC, that he/she hold a degree in law from a recognized university, that he/she must be a practicing advocate in courts of criminal and civil jurisdiction for a minimum of 7 years (continuous) and must have attained the age of 35 but not exceeded 48 years.
The association urged the GHADC to review and rectify the official resolution or letter and publish it in the newspaper or circulate it to all bar associations of all districts, clearly defining the qualification, syllabus for selection and the salary structure.
