EJI admin intensifies drive against illegal mining

Khliehriat, Feb 9: The district administration, East Jaintia Hills (EJH) has intensified enforcement drives against illegal mining, deputing five teams comprising of Executive Magistrates, Police and officials from the Directorate of Mineral Resources (DMR).

During the drives, 3197 MT (Approx) of coal were seized from 9 locations under Umlawang and 351 MT (Approx) from 4 locations under Umthe.

In a similar drive conducted on 6th February 2026, 3,356 MT (Approx) of coal was seized from 8 locations along the Sakhain–Thangsko road along with tools and equipment.

In addition, makeshift camps used in connection with illegal mining activities were identified and destroyed during the enforcement operations. FIRs have been registered in connection with reported illegal mining activities, and further legal action is underway.

A prohibitory order under Section 163 BNSS has been issued by the District Magistrate, East Jaintia Hills District to ensure public safety and facilitate ongoing operations.

The public is urged to cooperate with authorities, refrain from illegal mining and avoid visiting hazardous or restricted mining areas.
