62-yr-old Hindu shopkeeper killed in B’desh
DHAKA, Feb 10: A 62-year-old Hindu trader, Susen Chandra Sarkar, was hacked to death by unidentified attackers inside his shop in Trishal upazila of Bangladesh’s Mymensingh district, local media reported. The attack occurred on Monday night at the Bogar Bazar intersection, according to police. Sarkar, the owner of Bhai Bhai Enterprise, was assaulted with a sharp weapon, left inside the shop and the shutters were closed. His family discovered him while searching for him and rushed him to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, where he was declared dead. The victim’s son said the family had no known enemies and alleged the assailants stole several hundred thousand taka from the shop. He demanded swift justice for his father’s killing. The murder comes amid concerns over rising violence against minority communities in Bangladesh. Hindu groups say communal attacks have increased as parliamentary elections scheduled for February 12 approach, with dozens of incidents reported in recent months. (PTI)
12 killed, after bus falls into river in Nepal
Kathmandu, Feb 10: At least 12 persons were killed and eight others injured on Tuesday after a passenger bus fell into a river in central Nepal, local media reported. The incident occurred around 11 am when the bus enroute to Okhaldhunga from Kathmandu fell into the Tamakoshi River in Ramechhap municipality in Bagmati province, reported The Kathmandu Post. Ten of the 12 deceased passengers were identified, Manthali Hospital Medical Superintendent Dr Keshab Singh Dhami was reported as saying by The Himalayan Times. Eight people, including the driver, were injured in the crash, said Ramechhap Police Inspector Rajan Prasad Timilsina. Residents, security personnel, and rescue teams at the accident site transported the injured to various hospitals. (PTI)
Shooting at Maryland high school in US, suspect held
Rockville, Feb 10: One person was shot inside Thomas S. Wootton High School in Rockville, Maryland, on Monday, prompting an immediate lockdown of the campus, police said. Authorities confirmed that a suspect connected to the shooting is in custody and that there is no further threat to the public. Montgomery County police said officers were dispatched to the school at around 2:15 p.m. after receiving reports of shots fired. Rockville City Police echoed that the situation was under control. An administrator at the school told The Associated Press that students remained confined to their classrooms while police secured the building, though she was unable to provide additional details. The incident took place in Rockville, a suburb of Washington, D.C., and the county seat of Montgomery County, the most populous county in Maryland.
