WILLIAMNAGAR, Feb 10: Residents of Rongreng Baiza, on the outskirts of Williamnagar in East Garo Hills have intensified their opposition to an upcoming petrol pump, alleging the project is being constructed on illegally obtained land.
Members of the Rongmuthu clan, who previously filed an FIR over the alleged illegal sale of their ancestral land, submitted a fresh complaint to the Deputy Commissioner on February 9. They warned that the administration’s inaction could lead to law and order issues if construction continues without addressing the ownership dispute. “As the true landowners, we feel it is high time an investigation is conducted to verify ownership. We will not surrender our right to land inherited from our forefathers,” the clan members stated in a release.
According to the complaint, the land, measuring approximately seven hectares, belongs to Rakme R Sangma and the late Emarson G Momin, and was distributed to their daughters, Minibala R Sangma and Armilla R Sangma. The complainants alleged that one Rakesh G. Momin fraudulently acquired the plot using forged documentation to establish the fuel station.
“We have repeatedly asked the administration to verify these claims, but no action has been taken. This is creating significant tension and could lead to an escalated situation. We want the administration to be fair so this can be sorted out amicably,” they added.
The clan has demanded that construction work be halted until a solution is reached with the rightful owners.
