Tura, Feb 13: The Garo Students’ Union (GSU) – Nengkhra regional unit yesterday, Feb 12, submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister through the office of the Deputy Commissioner of East Garo Hills (EGH) seeking the immediate commencement of a bridge across the river at Agalgre.

The memo comes following a clarification from the Williamnagar unit of AHAM who informed the Union of an amount of Rs 15.56 crores being estimated by the Public Works Department (PWD) though it still awaits official approval.

The bridge will connect the two banks of the Rongtam River at Nengkhra Agalgre and provide much needed relief to residents across the river.

“The river becomes extremely dangerous to cross during the rainy season due to the strong current. This hampers the daily routine of students as well as other residents in their bid for a better life. Given the situation being faced by them, we can only demand the immediate commissioning of the bridge to ease their woes,” felt the Union.

The CSO felt that the bridge could go a long way in ensuring better access to education, healthcare and economic opportunities while also preventing deaths during floods.

Through the memo, the GSU asked the CM to immediately direct the concerned authorities on the matter and allocate the funds for the bridge’s construction.
