A special South Asian celebration in London highlighted Indian and South Asian films ahead of the 2026 BAFTA Awards.
The Manipuri comedy-drama Boong, produced by Farhan Akhtar’s Excel Entertainment and directed by debutant Lakshmipriya Devi, is nominated for Best Children’s & Family Film. Indian-American director Geeta Gandbhir’s true-crime documentary The Perfect Neighbour is shortlisted for Best Documentary and also an Oscar contender.
Gandbhir spoke about solidarity with marginalized communities and credited the Black community in the US for supporting her early career.
Representing Boong, assistant director Rahul Sharda praised the recognition of regional Indian cinema on a global stage.
The event, co-organized by Society O and Product of Culture, showcased South Asian storytelling and fostered industry connections.
Nominees included Magid/Zafar director Luis Hindman, filmmaker Gurinder Chadha, actress Varada Sethu, and the reunited cast of Goodness Gracious Me. The 79th BAFTAs will be held at London’s Royal Festival Hall on Sunday. (PTI)
